Escalators are an absolutely free public transport system for users, which allows quick access to the upper part of the historic center. Escalators, often combined with elevators, are close to the car parks located near the Acropolis. Those belonging to the area of Via dei Priori are the Pellini escalators that connect with the parking lot of the same name and with the Cupa stop of Minimetro. In 2021, the project to replace the stairs was completed, along with other related works functional to the redevelopment of the entire structure. The new roof has been created with totally glazed sections, surrounded by glass-glass photovoltaic elements, alternating shaded opaque surfaces with other transparent ones to ensure greater comfort, preserving transparency for the view. The lighting has been improved with the use of LED strips along the fixed and movable stairs and the installation of new backlit handrails. The redevelopment has preserved and restored the historic architectural spaces.
